Raising the bar: El Capitan FFA sending four to Nationals

Four recent El Capitan High School graduates will be recognized as National FFA Proficiency Finalists this week at the National FFA Convention in Indianapolis. The four finalists are Shaminka Elwin, Madysen Dietz, Clarke Conrad and Sofia Figueroa.
The students will travel to the National FFA Convention & Expo, where they will participate in the national awards process and be recognized among the country's top FFA members in their proficiency areas. After advancing through the state competition, updating their applications and record books, and completing their national interviews, they will find out during the convention's awards ceremony whether they are named the overall national winner in their respective categories.
FFA proficiency awards recognize students who develop specialized skills and gain hands-on experience through agricultural projects, supervised agricultural experiences (SAEs), and career-related work. Students document their experiences, responsibilities, skill development, and accomplishments in an application and record book that demonstrates their growth and success in their chosen area.
“Each of these four students first earned recognition at the California FFA State level, advancing them to the national competition,” said El Capitan Agriculture Science teacher Michaela Pignone. “To prepare for nationals, they updated their record books and applications and completed a virtual interview with national-level judges in September. They have now been selected as National FFA Proficiency Finalists, placing them among the top students in the country in their respective areas.”
Elwin is an FFA Proficiency Finalist in Agricultural Communications, Dietz in Sheep Production, Conrad in Specialty Animal Production and Figueroa in Agricultural Sales.
“Reaching this level is a significant accomplishment in FFA and a rare opportunity for students,” Pignone said. “They are representing not only El Capitan FFA, but also the Merced Union High School District and California FFA on a national stage.”
This is a first for the El Capitan High FFA program. They have sent proficiency finalists and even had winners before, but the program has never had four students become FFA Proficiency Finalists in the same year.
“Having four national proficiency finalists in one year is a tremendous accomplishment,” Pignone said. “This is the most number of national proficiency finalists we have had in our FFA Chapter in a single year. We have had a few finalists and winners in the past as well but to bring four students in the same year is something that has never been done before!”
“One of the most rewarding parts of agricultural education is seeing students turn their interests and hands-on experiences into meaningful opportunities for their futures,” Pignone added. “These awards represent the time, dedication, and skills the students have invested in their projects, along with the value of the agricultural education and FFA opportunities available to them.”
