Mentor Matching & Program Info

Participating teachers submit a letter of commitment to enroll in the program upon completion of credential verification paperwork. Participating teachers then review the MUHSD Induction Handbook, as part of the onboarding process.

Within 30 days of enrollment into the program, participating teachers will be paired with a mentor that matches the candidate's credentials, grade level, and/or subject area, as appropriate. Merced Union High School District contains only high schools and employs certificated staff who are appropriately credentialed to teach at the high school level.  Four FTE are assigned to serve as Induction Mentors; and therefore, candidates and mentors are matched by grade level. Together, the participating teacher and his/her mentor will collaboratively review the requirements for (and create) an ILP within the first 60 days of enrollment into the Induction Program. The ILP is designed and implemented solely for the professional growth and development of the participating teacher and not for evaluation for employment purposes.

All participating teachers will receive an average of one hour per week (minimum) of individualized support/mentoring coordinated and/or provided by the Induction Mentors. Induction Mentors will document interactions with their mentees through a Mentor Activity Log. The activity log is completed weekly and tracks candidate support, activities, and interactions. The Induction Program Director reviews the Mentor Activity Log on a bi-monthly basis to ensure accountability and continuity of services. Participating teachers and their mentor will work through a series of classroom and lesson inquiries, which are designed to help the teacher explore, question, discover, and reflect on new opportunities and possibilities that can grow their practice. Teachers will leave the program with a deeper understanding of the CSTP, the California academic content standards, and corresponding frameworks for their discipline. The MUHSD Induction Program uses a blended model providing lesson planning, observations, various online activities and requirements completed both asynchronously and in collaboration, debriefs, one-on-one meetings between teacher and mentor, content/grade level specific support, and professional development opportunities at both the site and district level. Once enrolled in the Induction Program, participating teachers will be given access to the program’s online course in Canvas, which will provide structure, resources, and pacing to the overall Induction experience. Participating teachers meet as a whole group up to four times each year for required professional development seminars.

Each year teachers complete activities reflecting their professional philosophy and passion for teaching as well as create evidence of practice related to growth in the CSTP. Each year, participating teachers will have an informal onsite mid-year review of their progress and receive a report on progress toward successful completion of the program.

At the conclusion of Year 2, the program staff conducts exit interviews where all online submissions of required components of the teacher's ILP are reviewed to determine the candidate’s fulfillment of the Professional Clear Credential Requirements. Candidates who successfully complete the Induction Program are recommended for a Clear Single Subject, Clear Multiple Subject or Clear Education Specialist credential.

All candidates enrolled in the MUHSD Induction Program are offered the program until they complete the program, withdraw from the program, are dropped from the program, or are admitted to another program.

Participating teachers are encouraged to protect all documents needed for clear credential recommendations. Teachers are responsible for back-up materials in the case of loss, theft, or any other circumstances that may cause destruction or loss of required evidence.
